Acclaimed novelist and critic Rodrigo Fresán will join Backstory Bookshop to discuss his recent novel Melvill, which reimagines the life of Herman Melville's father Allan Melvill. The book was first published in Spanish in 2022 by Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial. Will Vanderhyden's English translation was published in 2024 by Open Letter. Fresán will be in conversation with National Book Award finalist Ethan Rutherford.


Rodrigo Fresán is an Argentine fiction writer and journalist. Since 1999, Fresán has lived and worked in Barcelona, where he is a fixture on the city's literary scene. He is the author of twelve works of fiction, including The Invented Part, winner of the 2018 Best Translated Book Award, and its sequels, The Dreamed Part and The Remembered Part (all three available from Open Letter, translated by Will Vanderhyden). In 2017, he was awarded the Prix Roger Caillois.
