M. Van Shamrai is a Barcelona-based Ukrainian novelist and author of Scions of the Last Hope, a science fiction novel about humanity’s escape from a dying Earth, as two scientists uncover a millennia-old mystery threatening their new planetary home. Van Shamrai has lived in Barcelona since 2011. He began the manuscript in Ukraine at the end of 2009, long before the war, but it wasn't a straight sixteen years of writing — he set it aside more than once, including one long stretch where he'd lost the thread entirely. The start of the full-scale invasion in 2022 changed that: not as a backdrop, but as the thing that broke something open and gave the book its final direction.
